Research Opportunities

Graduate Researchers

We often have research or teaching assistantships available for highly motivated Masters or PhD students. We have a wide variety of research projects and availability of assistantships depends heavily on the availability of research funding. If are interested in our laboratory or have specific project ideas as an undergraduate we can work you to submit graduate fellowship applications through the National Science Foundation or other organizations.

Postdoctoral Researcher

The laboratory occasionally has positions for postdoctoral researchers and are always interested in working with individuals on postdoctoral fellowship applications for research in our lab. See below for any open postdoctoral opportunities:

Undergraduate Researchers

Our laboratory hosts many undergraduate students both within and outside of WSU. We have many volunteer research project opportunities for undergraduates to gain research experience so contact our lab for the availability of undergraduate opportunities. The lab is a fast-paced environment so we are only interested in highly motivated, career-driven students that can directly articulate how research experience will benefit their career goals.

We also often have opportunities for undergraduates to be involved in paid student hourly positions to help with specific laboratory tasks and fish husbandry/maintenance. Open positions are posted below, contact the lab for more information if you are interested:

Research Scientists

Hiring - Fish Hatchery Program Lead

The Fish Hatchery Program Lead will be responsible for managing the laboratory’s aquaculture systems and fish lines.  They will also be required to help conduct fish culture experiments as necessary to accomplish research objectives using their own knowledge and ideas to contribute to the project.  The work will require supervising graduate and undergraduate researchers in their experiments and fish care as well as managing undergraduate students to perform the required fish husbandry (feeding, cleaning, etc.).  The research technologists will lead all necessary maintenance of current aquaculture equipment and design and build new aquaculture systems as needed in the laboratory.  Given the nature of the work, the Research Technologist Supervisor must be able to work independently and learn new cutting-edge aquaculture methods to continually improve the system designs. This will require aquaculture systems design expertise and an interest in experimenting with new culture technologies.  The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about fish biology and willing to use their experience to contribute bold ideas and to push boundaries in the salmonid aquaculture and conservation field.  The ability to think outside the box and come up with novel ideas to further the laboratory, as well as the individual’s own research interests, will be highly valued.   In addition to fish hatchery operations, the position will also work closely with the laboratory’s cutting-edge research program to provide assistance in producing and culturing a variety of novel genetically engineered salmonid model systems using CRISPR genome editing, transgenic, and androgenesis technologies.  Work in this area will include significant academic freedom to explore ideas and research questions of personal interest.

Interested applicants can apply through the posting below or contact the Michael Phelps at the email below.
